In my mind, the perfect event has a number of things. A calm environment, an open timeframe, food/snacks, entertainment, and overall good ~vibes~. There is one event at SUU that I feel meets all of these requirements, and on top of all that, it happens every month! There is a reason that the monthly Bread and Soup Night has become a favorite among many students and has a high turnout every month. It checks all the boxes and additionally, it is for a good cause.
This upcoming Bread and Soup Night will take place on Monday, December 9 from 5-7:00 and it is holiday-themed, meaning that there will be holiday entertainment and a visit from Santa. The live entertainment includes performances from Black Student Union, Cedar High School Madrigals, Red Harmony, and other student performers. There will also be an ugly sweater contest with prizes, and who doesn’t love any opportunity for prizes.
But entertainment is just the beginning of why this event has been so successful in the past. Another huge reason this event has had success is that it provides some of the most comforting foods to poor college students at the price of just $1 and a non-perishable food item. Everyone knows that bread and soup are a classic combination that nurtures the soul and really livens up a school event. There is also an assortment of desserts that no college student can resist. There will be Chicken and Rice, Pasta e Fagioli, and Winter Vegetable soups.
And that $1 donation and food item? They go towards supporting the HOPE pantry, which is an on-campus resource that “provides SUU students non-perishable food items and some hygiene items to see you through the tight times in a friendly, no questions asked environment.” So not only does this event feed the students that attend, but it pays it forward to struggling students.
